Square Enix FY26 operating income surges 34.9% despite net sales decline
Square Enix posted strong profit growth in fiscal year 2026 despite declining net sales, according to financial results released for the year ending March 31, 2026. Operating income surged 34.9% year-over-year, driven primarily by robust sales of premium HD game titles and aggressive cost optimization measures.
The company experienced a revenue decline caused by reduced contributions from MMO titles and games available on smart devices and PC browsers. However, this was more than offset by exceptional performance from its HD Games division, which delivered several commercially successful releases. The standout performers included Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, and Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined—all titles that leveraged Square Enix’s signature HD-2D art style and established franchises.
The profit increase reflects not only strong game sales but also Square Enix’s ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency and streamline its business structure. The company updated its three-year strategic plan, first outlined in 2024, with renewed emphasis on strengthening its development infrastructure and enhancing its title management framework.
However, the company is tempering expectations for the upcoming fiscal year. Square Enix has forecasted a 10.5% decline in operating income for FY27, suggesting anticipated normalization in revenues after FY26’s exceptional performance.
