New Uwe Boll Zombie Movie Riffs On House Of The Dead And 28 Years Later
Infamous video game filmmaker Uwe Boll is staging a return to cinema with a new project titled “23 Years Later: The Castle of the Dead,” a spiritual successor to his controversial 2003 adaptation of Sega’s House of the Dead. The title deliberately echoes the recently released 28 Years Later films while referencing the original zombie shooter game.
Boll’s comeback was reportedly motivated in part by learning that director Paul W.S. Anderson is developing an official House of the Dead reboot for Sega, prompting Boll to announce his own competing spiritual successor. Production on the film is scheduled to begin September 5 in Germany, reuniting Boll with long-time collaborators including Michael Roesch, who has worked with the director on previous projects such as Blubberella and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.
The production moves forward despite a failed crowdfunding campaign that fell short of its goals, attracting only 39 backers toward a $14,000 target. The film will feature returning cast members Jonathan Cherry and Ona Grauer, who appeared in the original House of the Dead adaptation.
