Daemons of the Shadow Realm stole it’s biggest twist from M. Night Shyamalan
“Daemons of the Shadow Realm,” the new anime adaptation of a manga by Hiromu Arakawa, employs a narrative twist reminiscent of M. Night Shyamalan’s storytelling style. While Arakawa, best known for “Fullmetal Alchemist,” typically crafts stories centered on sibling relationships and intricate magical systems, this new series appears to share Shyamalan’s penchant for shocking plot revelations that fundamentally recontextualize earlier scenes.
The anime opens with protagonist Yuru, a blonde-haired character, hunting in the mountains surrounding an Edo-period rural village. However, within the first ten minutes, viewers encounter an anachronistic shock: an airplane appears in the sky above this historical setting. This jarring incongruity suggests a major narrative twist regarding either the actual timeline or the true nature of the story’s world, mirroring Shyamalan’s signature approach of subverting audience expectations with reveals that challenge the fundamental reality of what they’ve been watching.
The adaptation marks another example of Arakawa bringing her characteristic depth to new projects, while also demonstrating how established narrative techniques from one medium and storyteller can influence fresh adaptations in anime.
