Ancient MMO Final Fantasy 11 still has new things on the horizon 24 years after launch

Final Fantasy 11, the MMO that launched in 2002, is celebrating its 24th anniversary with a modernization push from Square Enix. The game’s website has received a visual overhaul, moving it closer to contemporary web standards. Most significantly, the free trial is being substantially expanded to allow new players unlimited playtime, removing previous restrictions.

Despite being one of gaming’s oldest active MMOs—predating World of Warcraft’s genre-defining impact—FF11 continues to receive new content and updates. While it exists in the shadow of its more popular successor, Final Fantasy 14, the title maintains a dedicated community. The game occasionally experiences server strain during peak activity periods, demonstrating its continued appeal after more than two decades.

Square Enix announced these anniversary developments during a livestream on its Japanese YouTube channel, signaling the company’s ongoing commitment to the aging title. The free trial expansion represents a strategic effort to attract new players and expand the MMO’s audience through increased accessibility.
