Subnautica 2’s no-killing ethos “will be a continued point of resistance” among players, say Unknown Worlds, but they have no plans to change it

With Subnautica 2’s early access launch, developer Unknown Worlds is fielding familiar criticism over the game’s deliberate lack of weapons and combat mechanics. The underwater exploration survival sim prioritizes stealth, evasion, and environmental adaptation over confrontation with dangerous alien organisms.

Design lead Anthony Gallegos acknowledged in a roundtable interview that this non-violent philosophy will be “a continued point of resistance” among some players accustomed to traditional combat-based survival games. Despite this pushback, Unknown Worlds remains committed to the vision, describing the constraint as “important and interesting” and central to the game’s identity.

The developers have no plans to introduce combat mechanics, reaffirming their focus on coexistence rather than conflict with larger creatures. This design choice reflects Unknown Worlds’ intention to create a distinct survival experience that emphasizes exploration, puzzle-solving, and environmental interaction over combat-focused gameplay, differentiating Subnautica 2 from genre conventions.
