Scott Miller, founder of Apogee, has over 1,000 hours in World of Warcraft and always plays a warrior in any RPG: ‘I like to get right in their face and pound away’

Scott Miller, founder of Apogee Software, has been a pioneering force in PC gaming for decades. Starting his game development career in 1975 with early computers like the Wang 2200 and Commodore PET, Miller witnessed the evolution of gaming technology firsthand. His discovery of free games on the early internet inspired him to begin releasing his own creations online, establishing a pattern that would define his future business model.

In 1987, Miller founded Apogee Software and revolutionized game distribution through the shareware model—releasing the first episode of a game for free while charging for additional episodes. This innovative approach enabled the company to publish iconic franchises including the Commander Keen series and the groundbreaking Wolfenstein 3D. When Apogee evolved into 3D Realms, Miller continued producing influential titles such as Max Payne and Prey (2006), cementing his legacy in the industry.

Beyond his professional achievements, Miller remains an active gamer. He has accumulated over 1,000 hours in World of Warcraft, where he demonstrates a clear preference for aggressive playstyles. “I like to get right in their face and pound away,” he explains regarding his warrior class choice. This preference extends beyond WoW—Miller consistently gravitates toward warrior characters across any RPG he plays, favoring direct combat engagement over ranged or tactical approaches.
