It’s official: Steam decrees ‘bullet heaven’ the name of the Vampire Survivors genre

Valve has officially canonized “Bullet Heaven” as the name for the Vampire Survivors genre on the Steam store. The tag was introduced as part of a batch of 17 new tags added to Steam’s classification system. Valve describes Bullet Heaven as “the opposite of Bullet Hell,” emphasizing that the genre focuses on upgrades and automatic attacking while players manage hordes of enemies.

This official designation marks a significant moment for a genre that has exploded in popularity on PC in recent years, with numerous titles following in Vampire Survivors’ wake since its early access launch. The other new tags added alongside Bullet Heaven include designations for wuxia games, desktop companions, cleaning games, and capybara-themed content, demonstrating Valve’s effort to maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date tag system that helps players discover new experiences.

The naming of Bullet Heaven is particularly notable as it represents industry-wide recognition that what began as a single breakout title has evolved into a distinct and thriving game genre with its own dedicated audience.
