This Subnautica 2 mod lets you kill all the fish you want

Subnautica 2 has become the focus of player discourse centered on a fundamental design choice: the removal of creature-killing mechanics. In the original Subnautica, players could use a survival knife to combat hostile sea creatures, including dangerous leviathans. However, Unknown Worlds Entertainment has deliberately designed Subnautica 2 to discourage violent gameplay, positioning it as a non-killing game instead.

This design philosophy has frustrated some players who encounter hostile creatures like Nibbler Mangos and Hammerheads in the game. They argue that combat options would provide necessary self-defense capabilities, particularly when facing threatening situations. The developers have remained firm in their position, suggesting that players seeking combat mechanics should play other games, as Subnautica 2 is intentionally focused on encouraging “non-violent and more creative solutions.”

The player community, however, has found a workaround. A mod has emerged that restores the ability to kill creatures in Subnautica 2, released shortly after the game’s early access launch. According to mod creator Domelll, frustration stemmed from discovering that creature-killing abilities had been removed after experiencing the original game.

This situation highlights a broader conversation between developers and players about game design philosophy and player agency. While Unknown Worlds has made a conscious creative decision to guide players toward pacifist approaches, some players view access to combat as an important gameplay option. The emergence of this mod demonstrates how modding communities can address gaps between developer vision and player expectations.
