This Surface owner lost their limited 50th Anniversary edition after a repair swap, and fans are rightly upset
A Microsoft Surface Laptop 7 winner who received one of only 50 limited 50th Anniversary editions lost their device in what appears to be a significant repair mix-up. Rhener Furtado was among the exclusive recipients of the special edition Surface Laptop 7. When the device developed freezing issues, Furtado sent it to Microsoft for repairs, with confidence it would be properly handled.
Microsoft’s repair team provided written confirmation that they would perform a “same unit repair,” indicating the device would be fixed and returned to its original owner. However, when the repaired unit arrived, Furtado discovered it was a standard Surface Laptop 7 rather than the limited 50th Anniversary edition. The special edition device has effectively disappeared into Microsoft’s repair system.
The situation raises serious concerns about Microsoft’s device tracking and handling procedures. For collectors and fans of special editions, the loss of such an exclusive device is particularly distressing. With only 50 of these limited edition units produced, the loss of one represents a significant portion of the entire production run. It remains unclear whether Furtado will be able to recover the original device or what compensation Microsoft might offer.
