Take-Two’s CEO says AI’s not in the business of making hits, ‘datasets by their very nature are backward looking’, but that doesn’t mean AI can’t be ‘super helpful’

Take-Two’s CEO has weighed in on the role of artificial intelligence in game development, offering a cautious perspective on AI’s capabilities in creating commercially successful titles. The executive stated that “clones don’t sell,” emphasizing that while AI tools may increase productivity, they don’t necessarily result in hit games or provide new developers with a competitive advantage.

A key point in the CEO’s comments is that datasets used to train AI systems are inherently “backward looking”—meaning AI learns from existing data and past trends rather than predicting future market demands. This fundamental limitation means that AI cannot determine what will resonate with audiences or become the next successful game, since it can only reference what has already been made.

However, the CEO also acknowledged that AI can be “super helpful” as a development tool, suggesting a balanced view of AI’s role in the industry. The comments reflect a recognition that ease of tool use does not equal equal opportunity for success. Creating commercially successful games still requires human creativity, judgment, and understanding of market trends that AI cannot replicate.
