Civilization 7 Is A Completely Different Game Following The Test Of Time Update

Firaxis Games and 2K released the Test of Time update for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII on May 19, marking the most substantial update to the 4X strategy game since its February launch. The update fundamentally reworks how the game functions and how players achieve victory, introducing changes that directly address long-standing community feedback.

The most significant change introduces “Time-Tested Civs,” which allow players to maintain a single civilization throughout an entire campaign instead of being forced to select a new civilization each time they transition to a new age. This feature directly responds to one of the game’s most controversial design decisions at launch, which proved to be a contentious point within the franchise’s community.

At Civilization 7’s release, players were required to change civilizations when entering a new age—a mechanic that differentiated it from earlier entries in the series. However, extensive community feedback identified this as a major pain point for players who preferred the traditional approach of stewarding a single civilization from ancient times through the modern era.

With the Test of Time update, any civilization can now be guided “outside its historical Apex Age,” the point in time when that civilization was at its peak. This flexibility enables players to develop their chosen civilization beyond its intended historical period, providing greater long-term strategic continuity. The update represents a significant design philosophy shift for Civilization 7, effectively addressing one of the most frequently requested features since launch.
