Tarkov’s Edge of Darkness Players Snubbed Again in Latest Update
Escape from Tarkov developer Battlestate Games has sparked community controversy with the release of update 1.0.4.9, which introduces a permanent experience bonus system tied to the game’s different edition tiers. While the system was intended to reward players across all versions, Edge of Darkness—the original premium edition that was previously the top-tier package—appears to have been left behind, receiving fewer benefits than The Unheard Edition, the current flagship version priced at approximately €250.
The permanent XP boost system distributes bonuses across Tarkov’s various editions, but the allocation has created frustration among Edge of Darkness owners who feel undervalued by the developer. The Unheard Edition’s introduction came several years after Edge of Darkness and has effectively superseded it in the game’s monetization hierarchy, leaving legacy premium players disadvantaged in progression terms.
This latest perceived snub has compounded existing frustrations within the Tarkov community, where edition-specific benefits and balancing have been ongoing points of contention. The controversy highlights the challenge live-service games face in managing legacy content and player expectations when introducing newer tiers, as well as the tension between rewarding new monetization options and maintaining goodwill with long-standing premium players.
