The Mass Effect sci-fi RPG subgenre “hasn’t had a good game in a long time”, says Hasbro, and it believes Exodus can change that

Hasbro’s leadership believes the sci-fi role-playing game genre has stagnated, with no notable entries in recent years despite the legacy of BioWare’s acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy. Chris Cocks, Hasbro’s chief executive, expressed confidence that Exodus—an upcoming title from Archetype Entertainment—can revitalize the market and meet what he describes as significant player demand.

Archetype Entertainment, a studio owned by Wizards of the Coast (Hasbro’s gaming subsidiary), was founded by veteran designers from BioWare, including James Ohlen. Ohlen, who led design on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, brings substantial AAA RPG experience to the project. His involvement signals an attempt to recapture the quality and design philosophy that made earlier sci-fi RPGs successful.

According to Cocks, there remains “a big need in the marketplace” for well-crafted sci-fi RPGs. The sentiment reflects an industry observation that the space between Mass Effect 3’s release in 2012 and contemporary titles has left a notable gap for story-driven, character-focused science fiction experiences. With Archetype Entertainment’s experienced leadership and Hasbro’s backing, Exodus represents the company’s strategic bet to fill that void in the market.
