Gen.G CEO Criticises KeSPA For Asia Games LoL Team Selection

Gen.G CEO Arnold Hur has publicly criticized the Korean eSports Association (KeSPA) over its selection process for the 2026 Asia Games League of Legends team, taking issue with the organization’s use of statistic-based criteria for team composition.

The Asia Games 2026 represents a pivotal opportunity for Korean esports professionals, as the competition is the largest multi-sport event outside the Olympics. For competitors, the stakes are particularly high—a gold medal in esports events grants exemption from mandatory military service in South Korea, making selection to the national team highly consequential.

KeSPA has finalized the roster as: Choi ‘Zeus’ Woo-je, Kim ‘Canyon’ Geon-bu, Kim ‘Zeca’ Geon-woo, Lee ‘Faker’ Sang-hyeok, Lee ‘Gumayusi’ Min-hyung, and Ryu ‘Keria’ Min-seok. The selection notably includes three veterans from Korea’s gold medal-winning squad at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games—Zeus, Faker, and Keria—providing continuity and proven success to the team. However, Hur’s criticism suggests dissatisfaction with how KeSPA weighted statistical performance in its selection methodology, potentially implying that other players, including Gen.G’s midlaner Jeong ‘Chovy’ Ji-hoon, may have been overlooked.

This controversy highlights ongoing tensions within professional esports regarding team selection criteria and the considerable significance of international competition within the sport, particularly when military service implications are involved.
