Microsoft unveils Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 for 2026 with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 chips, display upgrades, and new haptics: Launching first for business customers today

Microsoft has unveiled its next-generation Surface lineup for 2026, introducing the Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 with Intel’s new Core Ultra Series 3 chips. The devices are launching today for business customers, with consumer models and Snapdragon X2 variants arriving later in the year.

The Surface Laptop 8 for Business features several notable upgrades over its predecessor, including optional integrated privacy screens, higher-resolution displays (15-inch model reaches 3270x2180 resolution at 262 PPI), faster M.2 SSDs, and enhanced haptic touchpads. The 15-inch model’s improved display clarity and privacy screen—which obscures the screen from side viewing angles—are highlighted as significant upgrades for professionals handling sensitive data. However, the devices command premium pricing, with the Surface Laptop for Business 8 starting at $1,949.99, and real-world battery life reaching approximately eight hours.

The Surface Pro 12 for Business (12th Edition) represents a more modest update, adding Intel’s “Panther Lake” Core Ultra Series 3 chips while maintaining the same design as its predecessor. The device gains an optional 5G connectivity option but otherwise delivers incremental improvements over the Surface Pro 11.

Microsoft is addressing affordability concerns by introducing an 8GB RAM configuration for the 13-inch Surface Laptop later this year—the first Surface PC to ship below the 16GB minimum since Copilot+ PCs launched in 2024. This configuration will not support Copilot+ PC features, reflecting the RAM supply challenges affecting the industry.

Both devices will receive Snapdragon X2 variants, though availability is expected to extend several months into the future. The staggered launch and multiple processor options reflect Microsoft’s strategy to serve both enterprise and consumer segments with varied performance, price, and battery life profiles.
