Nintendo has just announced Wario Ware-like game Pictonico! for mobile phones, and it looks absolutely bonkers

Nintendo has announced Pictonico!, a new free-to-start mobile game that creatively transforms user photos into quirky minigames. Co-developed with Intelligent Systems, the studio behind the WarioWare series, Pictonico! draws inspiration from the chaotic minigame format that WarioWare is known for.

The game’s unique mechanic involves using photos from users’ phone galleries—either newly taken selfies or existing pictures—and warping the faces in those photos into 80 different minigames. Players can feature their friends, family, coworkers, and other people from their photos in absurd and comical scenarios. Nintendo has teased minigame examples such as licking lollipops, summoning genies, defending against zombies, washing away embarrassing memories, zipping mouths, and skydiving—all featuring the real faces of those closest to the player.

Pictonico! launches May 28 on both iOS and Android devices simultaneously. The game uses a free-to-start monetization model with a free demo version that includes three minigames to start. Additional minigames can be purchased through “game volumes,” allowing players to expand their collection of chaotic scenarios.

The announcement exemplifies Nintendo’s approach to mobile gaming, combining its characteristic creativity and humor with accessible free-to-play mechanics. By incorporating personal photos, Pictonico! adds a novel social element to the minigame formula, making each player’s experience uniquely tied to their personal relationships and photo library. The involvement of Intelligent Systems ensures the fast-paced minigame gameplay that fans of WarioWare expect, now delivered in bite-sized format specifically designed for mobile phones.
