Rick and Morty movie officially confirmed by Dan Harmon with the best possible director
Adult Swim has officially confirmed that an animated film based on the acclaimed series Rick and Morty is in development. Series co-creator Dan Harmon made the announcement to Cinemablend ahead of the show’s season 9 premiere on May 24, 2026.
Jacob Hair, the show’s supervising director since season 4, will direct the feature film. Hair has established himself as one of the series’ strongest visual storytellers, having helmed several critically acclaimed episodes including “The Old Man and the Seat,” “Rattlestar Ricklactica,” and “The Vat of Acid Episode.” These episodes are characterized by their blend of the show’s signature irreverent humor with emotionally resonant, cinematic storytelling—suggesting Hair is well-positioned to translate the show’s unique voice to a theatrical format.
The film project represents a significant expansion for one of Adult Swim’s most successful and culturally impactful properties. The selection of Hair as director indicates the creative team is committed to preserving the show’s distinctive vision while elevating its scope and scale. This announcement arrives at a pivotal moment for the franchise as it prepares to enter its ninth season.
