Sony increasing the price of PlayStation Plus for new customers

Sony has announced price increases for PlayStation Plus subscriptions effective May 20, 2026, affecting new customers in select regions including the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe. One-month subscriptions for PS Plus Essential will now cost $10.99 USD, €9.99 EUR, and £7.99 GBP, while three-month subscriptions will cost $27.99 USD, €27.99 EUR, and £21.99 GBP. Annual subscription pricing remains unchanged.

The company attributed the adjustment to “ongoing market conditions,” following previous price increases for PlayStation 5 hardware. The new pricing applies only to new subscribers in most markets, leaving existing annual subscribers unaffected. Turkey and India are excluded from the pricing structure.

Industry analysis suggests the strategy aims to shift customers toward annual subscriptions by making shorter-term options less economical. The move comes amid declining consumer confidence in the service’s value proposition—recent surveys indicate only 18% of users consider PS Plus Essential to represent good value for money in 2026. The announcement prompted social media criticism, with some users arguing that online gameplay should be available without paywalls.
