Sony is being sued for alleged tariff ‘double recovery windfall’

California consumers are suing Sony Interactive Entertainment, alleging the company is poised to receive a “double recovery windfall” from the Trump administration’s IEEPA tariff refunds without passing the benefits to customers.

According to the lawsuit filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California—Walker et al v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC—plaintiffs contend that Sony increased PlayStation console prices during the tariff period and now stands to benefit from tariff refunds without reducing consumer prices accordingly.

The price increases were announced in late March and took effect in April and May across multiple regions, marking the second hike for US customers since August of the previous year. Plaintiffs argue this constitutes unfair double recovery: Sony raised prices citing tariff pressures, and now aims to pocket the financial gains from tariff relief without returning savings to consumers.

The case highlights growing consumer scrutiny over corporate pricing practices amid shifting trade policies.
