Another Steam Game Gets Removed Over Malware

Valve has removed the free-to-play survival-horror game Beyond the Dark from Steam after it was discovered to contain malware designed to steal player data. The malicious code was hidden within a file called UnityPlayer.dll and went undetected for several months following the game’s December 2024 launch.

YouTuber Eric Parker, who has over 200,000 subscribers, exposed the threat through a detailed investigation video that accumulated more than 130,000 views. His investigation prompted Valve to take action and remove the game from the platform, though the company has not publicly commented on the removal or its reasoning.

Beyond the Dark had received mixed reception on Steam with a “Mixed” rating based on 39 user reviews. Adding another layer to the incident, the game was originally uploaded to Steam in December 2024 under a different name, Rodent Race, before apparently being replaced by Beyond the Dark.

The removal highlights ongoing security concerns regarding malicious software distributed through games on Steam. While Valve has previously removed titles containing malware, this incident is notable for the role a popular content creator played in identifying and exposing the threat to the gaming community.
