How sexy will James Bond game 007: First Light be? Hitman studio IO Interactive says the clues are already out there
IO Interactive is developing 007: First Light, a new James Bond game that aims to authentically capture the iconic spy while modernizing certain classic aspects of the character. The studio has demonstrated meticulous attention to detail, including documentation of Bond’s signature watch, his Aston Martin vehicle, and a villain cameo. The game also features a Bond Theme recorded by acclaimed artist Lana Del Rey.
A significant focus of IO Interactive’s development involves reimagining Bond’s portrayal. Historically, James Bond films have portrayed the character as notably sexist and misogynistic, treating female characters primarily as disposable romantic interests. The 1995 film GoldenEye even includes a scene where M explicitly calls Bond a “sexist, misogynist dinosaur.” Earlier Bond films are particularly known for their problematic treatment of women, who are often depicted as secondary characters designed primarily for romantic or decorative purposes.
IO Interactive has signaled that 007: First Light will move away from this problematic characterization. In discussing the game’s development, the studio indicated that certain elements of the classic Bond formula “fall by the wayside.” This signals an intentional effort to modernize the character while preserving what makes James Bond iconic.
The approach reflects broader industry trends toward more thoughtful and inclusive character development. By maintaining Bond’s recognizable elements—the watches, the cars, the glamour—while actively addressing his historical misogyny, IO Interactive is attempting to deliver a James Bond experience that feels contemporary and respectful, updating a legacy character for modern audiences.
