Backrooms actor Chiwetel Ejiofor was surprised to find out the 30,000 square foot set is the first of its kind: ‘I thought that somewhere it had been built before’

The Backrooms, an A24 film directed by Kane Parsons, is set to release within the coming week. The project adapts the long-running creepypasta horror franchise and its substantial existing fan media. With considerable online Backrooms content already established, the film faces high expectations from fans of the source material.

Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who stars in the production, was notably impressed by the film’s physical set construction. According to Ejiofor, he was surprised to discover that the production’s 30,000 square-foot set is the first of its kind. Ejiofor had initially expected that a set of similar scale must have been built previously, but the production confirmed this set was unprecedented for the Backrooms property.

The substantial practical set construction indicates a significant production investment in bringing the horror property to the screen. This approach distinguishes the theatrical adaptation from the many fan-created Backrooms projects available online, which have ranged in scope from short films to written content.

Horror has enjoyed a particularly strong year in cinema, and the Backrooms adaptation arrives as part of this ongoing trend.
