Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core is a good roguelite shooter, but a little less special than the game that spawned it

Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core, a new roguelike FPS spin-off from Ghost Ship Games, has launched into early access. The game transposes the mining and squad-based gameplay of the original Deep Rock Galactic into a roguelike framework, featuring elite Reclaimers—dwarves trained as combat specialists who paradoxically still engage in mining operations between firefights against waves of monsters.

Early impressions reveal Rogue Core as a competent roguelite shooter that successfully adapts Deep Rock Galactic’s core appeal into a standalone roguelike experience. Reviews are divided on its distinctiveness: one assessment describes it as a solid game but somewhat less special than its predecessor, while another suggests the early access build has made meaningful progress in carving out its own identity beyond being merely “an ambitious side-mode” of the original.

The title maintains the fundamental elements that defined Deep Rock Galactic—squad-based mining, subterranean exploration, and combat encounters—while adding roguelike tension and procedural variety. Players continue wielding pickaxes to extract minerals even during the more combat-focused Reclaimers’ operations. With this early access launch, Ghost Ship Games expands the Deep Rock Galactic universe with a fresh, albeit slightly less distinctive, take on the original’s formula.
