Final Fantasy 11 expected a ‘sharp player decline’ once the hype from the FF14 crossover and welcome back campaigns ended, but that never came
Final Fantasy 11, the 24-year-old MMO that originally launched on PlayStation 2 and PC, continues to maintain a healthy player base despite developer expectations to the contrary. According to a recent Famitsu interview with director and producer Yoji Fujito, Square Enix had anticipated a “sharp player decline” once the excitement from promotional campaigns and crossover content subsided. However, this expected downturn never materialized.
The game benefited from several high-profile initiatives, including a crossover raid series with Final Fantasy 14 titled “Echoes of Vana” and various welcome back campaigns designed to attract new and returning players. While the developer initially viewed these events as temporary player boosters, the sustained engagement suggests deeper appeal beyond seasonal content cycles.
This longevity is notable in the MMO landscape. While World of Warcraft has also endured for over two decades, the continued vitality of a 24-year-old game that bridges legacy console gaming and modern MMO design remains impressive. Final Fantasy 11’s ability to retain players across multiple generations of gaming platforms underscores the franchise’s cultural significance and the devoted community sustaining the title.
