Intel chief: ‘In the past, we made a lot of mistakes… from day one I came on board as CEO, I have all the engineering report to me’

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan discussed the company’s turnaround strategy during an appearance on CNBC’s Mad Money, crediting significant organizational restructuring for the chipmaker’s recent recovery. In an interview with host Jim Cramer, Tan revealed that all engineering teams now report directly to him as CEO—a departure from the previous leadership structure that had existed under his predecessor.

Tan emphasized that this centralized reporting structure was implemented to eliminate organizational silos that had previously hindered decision-making and coordination across the company. By consolidating engineering oversight at the executive level from his first day as CEO, Tan has worked to streamline processes and simplify Intel’s product roadmap. The CEO acknowledged that Intel had made numerous mistakes in the past but stressed the company is actively correcting course through these structural changes.

The new management approach represents a fundamental shift in how Intel operates, breaking down the compartmentalized structure that had existed previously. Tan’s hands-on oversight of engineering divisions reflects his confidence that direct executive involvement in technical decisions is crucial to Intel’s competitive future. His appearance highlighted how the restructuring appears to be yielding results, with Tan pointing to Intel’s recent success as evidence of the effectiveness of these internal organizational changes.
