PSA - Upgrade Your Nvidia Graphics Drivers To Avoid a “High-Severity” Vulnerability

Nvidia has released a security bulletin disclosing 15 vulnerabilities affecting its Windows and Linux graphics drivers, with nine classified as “high-severity.” These exploits could allow attackers to damage systems, gain administrative access, exfiltrate personal data, or execute arbitrary code remotely.

GeForce graphics card owners are urged to update their drivers immediately. The minimum safe versions are 596.36 for modern GeForce GPUs and 482.53 for GTX 10-series and older cards. Nvidia has released version 596.49 as the latest update to address all vulnerabilities.

Users can download updated drivers directly from Nvidia’s website or through the Nvidia app on Windows, which typically prompts users to install available updates automatically. Those running the Nvidia app may already have the latest version if they’ve accepted recent update prompts.

This disclosure represents a rare but critical security alert from Nvidia, emphasizing the importance of maintaining current graphics drivers. Graphics drivers have broad system-level access, making driver vulnerabilities particularly dangerous. The high-severity rating reflects the potential for severe impact if exploited by malicious actors.

All GeForce GPU owners should prioritize updating to the latest release to protect their systems from compromise.
