Don’t Expect A Pokémon GO Sequel Any Time Soon

Pokémon GO, Niantic’s massively popular mobile game approaching its tenth anniversary, will not be getting a sequel in the foreseeable future, according to Ed Wu, president of games at Scopely and former senior vice president of Pokémon GO at Niantic.

In recent comments to GamesIndustry.biz, Wu explained that creating a sequel would be the wrong strategic approach for the franchise. Rather than pursuing a traditional sequel, Niantic’s leadership believes that dividing the community with a new game would undermine the foundation of Pokémon GO’s success.

Wu’s reasoning centers on what makes Pokémon GO unique in the gaming landscape. The game’s massive community exists because it integrates seamlessly into players’ daily lives as they explore their world. A sequel would fragment this unified playerbase, diminishing the collaborative, social aspects that have sustained the title for a decade.

Instead of pursuing a sequel, Niantic appears committed to evolving Pokémon GO as a long-term live service. This strategy prioritizes keeping the existing community intact while continuing to introduce new features and content updates that maintain engagement.

The decision reflects a broader industry trend where successful live-service games are maintained and expanded indefinitely rather than replaced with sequels. For Pokémon GO specifically, this approach makes sense given its unique position as a location-based social experience.
