Microsoft launching improved Xbox Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers

Microsoft has announced an updated version of its Xbox Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers, addressing a key usability challenge identified by the disability community. The redesigned toppers are engineered to minimize accidental removal during high-force gameplay, featuring a new ‘Goal Post’ design that enhances durability and retention during intensive sessions.

The Xbox Adaptive Controller, originally launched in 2018, represents Microsoft’s commitment to accessible gaming hardware. These thumbstick toppers are an essential customizable component that allows players with varying dexterity levels and abilities to adapt their controller setup to their needs.

The updated toppers will be distributed as 3D printable files through Xbox Design Labs beginning May 21, 2026. This approach enables broader access and customization while supporting the maker community. The announcement was made at the Xbox Ability Summit, underscoring Microsoft’s collaborative approach to accessibility design—one that directly incorporates feedback from disability advocates and users into product development cycles.
