Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced creative director on the ‘super faithful’ remake of the pirate classic

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is getting a full-scale remake titled Resynced, with creative direction from Ubisoft veteran Paul Fu, who worked on the original game. The remake has been described as “super faithful” and “additive, not edited,” suggesting it will maintain the core appeal of the beloved 2013 pirate adventure while incorporating modern technology and design improvements.

One significant change from the original is the removal of modern-day sequences featuring the mysterious company Abstergo Entertainment. In the original game, players examined Edward Kenway’s memories as part of Abstergo’s research for a potential movie adaptation. These modern-day sequences, which were integral to early Assassin’s Creed games, have been increasingly phased out in recent franchise entries—a decision that has been divisive among fans.

Paul Fu explained that his personal connection to the original game—it was one of his early projects at Ubisoft—drives his approach to the remake. Rather than substantially altering the game, the team is taking an additive approach, expanding on the foundation of the original while preserving what made it special to players.
