Review: Bubsy 4D (Switch 2) - A Maligned Mascot Finally Gets A Good Game

After three decades of infamy, Bubsy—the wisecracking bobcat mascot from Accolade’s 1993 platformer boom—is finally getting critical respect. The long-maligned character, notorious for clumsy design and unresponsive controls, is headlining Bubsy 4D, which releases on Switch 2 and PS5 with largely positive initial reception.

The seventh major Bubsy game is developed by independent studio Fabraz, creators of acclaimed platformers Slime-san and Demon Tides. This pedigree appears justified: critics across multiple outlets report that Bubsy 4D is not only the best game in the franchise but actually feels like a competent, purposeful entry—a marked departure from previous failed revival attempts by publisher Atari.

The game significantly expands Bubsy’s moveset beyond his classic jump and glide, adding a Yoshi-style double jump, horizontal pounce, and ball transformation mechanics that build momentum. Reviews emphasize improved maneuverability and responsive controls, addressing the core weaknesses that plagued earlier installments.

However, tempered enthusiasm surrounds the release. While critics acknowledge Bubsy 4D as a substantial improvement and “almost certainly the best game starring that talkative bobcat,” opinions diverge on its absolute quality. Some find exhaustion in its heavy-handed ’90s nostalgia, and assessments suggest competence rather than exceptional design.

Atari has supported the launch with a physical ‘Pawsome Edition’ for Switch 2, featuring the full game on cartridge plus a day-one patch. The release represents Atari’s latest effort in a prolonged redemption campaign for the franchise, finally achieving modest success after two underwhelming revivals and a poorly received retro collection.
