Bungie Is Reportedly Planning ‘Significant’ Layoffs, Destiny 3 Not in the Works
Bungie is planning significant layoffs following the announcement that Destiny 2 will end live service content updates in June. According to a Bloomberg report citing sources at the studio, the company does not have an immediate successor project greenlit for its Destiny 2 development team.
While Destiny 3 is not currently in active development, the company has not ruled out creating one eventually. Instead, Bungie is focusing resources on Marathon, an extraction shooter that launched in March but has underperformed commercially. Some Destiny 2 developers have already been reassigned to Marathon in hopes of growing its player base.
The layoffs represent another challenging period for Bungie, which was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment for $3.6 billion in 2022. Staff members are currently pitching new projects, some of which may explore the Destiny universe, but none of these have been officially greenlit at this time. The studio appears to be in a transitional phase as it seeks to establish its post-Destiny 2 direction.
