Destiny 2’s active development will end in June

Bungie has announced the end of live service development for Destiny 2, with the final content update “Monument of Triumph” scheduled for June 9, 2026. The game will remain playable indefinitely following the update, mirroring the continued availability of the original Destiny.

Nearly nine years after its 2017 launch, Destiny 2’s conclusion comes after The Final Shape expansion in 2024, which the studio indicated was a natural stopping point for the game’s live service model. The final update will focus on returning popular features and character storylines based on player requests, described as “love letters to players.”

The decision reflects Bungie’s shift in focus toward new projects, including the recently launched extraction shooter Marathon and unannounced future titles. The studio, acquired by Sony in 2022 for $3.6 billion, conducted significant layoffs affecting 17 percent of its workforce following The Final Shape’s release, signaling the organizational changes accompanying this transition.

The announcement comes as Destiny 2’s player numbers have declined in recent years, following extended live service support through 30 seasons and numerous updates across 10 expansions since launch. The final update aims to provide meaningful closure for the dedicated player base that sustained the shared world shooter throughout its lifecycle.
