I’ve played 1000s of hours of Overwatch but it wasn’t until its new Anniversary game mode that I discovered I have no clue what the hell I’m doing

Overwatch’s 10-year anniversary celebration entered its second week with the introduction of Mystery Showdown, a new variation of the popular Mystery Heroes game mode. The mode maintains the chaotic appeal of Mystery Heroes—where players receive random heroes throughout the match—but with structured modifications.

Unlike traditional Mystery Heroes, where players swap heroes upon death, Mystery Showdown assigns new heroes when players secure eliminations. Additionally, players must first select a role queue, guaranteeing consistent team composition with one tank, two DPS heroes, and two support characters. This approach reduces some of the unpredictability inherent to Mystery Heroes while preserving the spontaneous, chaotic gameplay that makes the mode entertaining.

The anniversary celebration extends beyond the new game mode, offering players additional activities including special challenges and loot boxes throughout the two-week event. One veteran player with thousands of hours invested in Overwatch noted that Mystery Showdown exposed significant gaps in their understanding of game mechanics and hero abilities, suggesting the mode offers a fresh perspective even for experienced players.
