Sony Quietly Increased the Price of PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Subscriptions, Too

Sony has quietly increased prices for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscription tiers, despite only publicly announcing increases for the Essential tier. The price adjustments, which took effect on May 20, 2026, affect new and lapsed customers in select regions worldwide.

The company’s initial announcement focused solely on Essential tier pricing, citing “ongoing market conditions” as justification. However, Extra and Premium subscriptions have also seen price increases. In the US market, the Essential tier’s monthly subscription rose by $1 (to $10.99) and the three-month option increased by $3 (to $27.99). Similar increases apply to Extra and Premium tiers across affected regions including the UK, Europe, and Australia.

A notable distinction exists regarding 12-month subscription plans. In most regions, annual subscriptions remain unchanged across all three tiers, protecting long-term customers from immediate price hikes. Australia represents an exception, with price increases applied across all subscription lengths and membership levels.

The changes specifically target new subscribers and lapsed customers whose previous subscriptions have expired. Existing customers with active rolling subscription plans are unaffected unless their subscription lapses or expires, at which point renewal would occur at the new rates.

Sony’s approach of limiting public disclosure to the Essential tier while implementing broader price increases across its subscription portfolio has drawn criticism. Players feel misled by the incomplete communication regarding the full scope of price changes, representing a departure from standard corporate transparency.
