Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Dev Regrets Brutal PS5 Platinum Trophy
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has expressed regret over the game’s Platinum Trophy requirements during an interview with Restart.Run. When asked what he wished he’d done differently during development, Hamaguchi highlighted the trophy system as a surprising point of concern.
The issue stems from a fundamental design philosophy: Square Enix created Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth with a vast range of optional activities and content that players could choose to engage with based on their interests. However, the Platinum Trophy requirements force players to complete and master essentially all of these activities perfectly, negating the optional nature of the content.
Hamaguchi acknowledged that this created an unreasonable expectation for players seeking to earn the platinum achievement. Rather than allowing players to enjoy the game at their own pace and select which activities interested them, the trophy list demanded comprehensive completion of every element the game had to offer. This contradiction between the game’s design philosophy and its trophy requirements highlighted an oversight in how the achievement system was implemented.
