PS5’s Superhero Fighter Is Taking Over Marvel Comics
Sony’s upcoming superhero fighting game Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is expanding its narrative universe through both the game itself and tie-in comic book media. The game features a robust 10-hour story mode presented as an interactive comic book, blending traditional narrative with combat sequences to create a unique storytelling experience.
To deepen the lore and world-building, Marvel Comics is releasing Marvel Tokon: First Strike #1, a one-shot comic written by Steve Orlando, Tom Waltz, and Josh Trujillo, with art by Bruno Büll, Áthila Fabbio, and Ryusei Yamada. This comic will explore the background and motivations of the game’s primary antagonist, The Promoter—a dimension-hopping Master of Ceremonies who orchestrates a high-stakes superhero fighting competition with global consequences.
The integration of comic book storytelling with the game’s narrative suggests a multimedia approach to building the Marvel Tokon universe. By offering both interactive gameplay-focused narrative in the game and traditional comic book storytelling, Marvel and Sony are positioning the title as a transmedia property that appeals to both video game and comic book audiences.
The release of the one-shot comic ahead of or alongside the game’s launch represents a growing trend of game publishers leveraging comic books and other media to expand their franchises’ mythologies and provide additional context for players.
