Toy Story 5 director reveals why he made his first Pixar movie in 10 years

Director Andrew Stanton, known for his acclaimed work on Finding Nemo and Wall-E, is returning to direct Toy Story 5—his first Pixar feature film since 2016’s Finding Dory. After a decade-long absence from Pixar’s feature output, Stanton explained his decision to helm the beloved franchise’s next chapter. When asked why he agreed to take on the project, he offered a characteristically candid answer: “Somebody might fuck it up.” While humorous, the sentiment reflects his genuine commitment to protecting one of cinema’s most iconic franchises from a potentially misguided creative direction.

The fifth installment will explore contemporary themes through the lens of the Toy Story universe. The plot centers on Bonnie, the toys’ current owner, acquiring a new tablet device called Lilypad that threatens to replace traditional toys and the companionship they provide. This technology-focused narrative allows the film to examine how digital devices are reshaping childhood and play.

The production also involves significant voice casting changes. Several iconic voice roles are being recast, including Mr. Potato Head, following the death of original voice actor Don Rickles. These changes mark a transition for the franchise as it moves forward while honoring its legacy.
