Gothic 1 Remake will require an update to be playable offline
Physical copies of the Gothic 1 Remake began arriving to early players, but an unexpected requirement frustrated recipients. Despite purchasing a physical copy, players cannot play the game offline without first connecting to the internet to download a mandatory update.
On May 22, the game preservation-focused X account Does it Play? first documented the issue, reporting that early copies display an error message stating “Unable to check the state of the game. Please make sure you are connected to the internet and try again.” This online requirement caught many by surprise, as neither THQ Nordic nor the game’s developer had publicly announced any connectivity requirement beforehand.
The situation highlights growing tensions around game preservation and ownership. Physical media traditionally promised independence from online services, but this update requirement means that future players without internet access—or in scenarios where publisher servers eventually shut down—could find the game unplayable. Game preservation advocates and collectors view such digital gating as problematic for the long-term accessibility of games.
The official Gothic franchise account acknowledged the issue, confirming the online update requirement exists. The incident illustrates a broader challenge in modern gaming: balancing digital convenience with the promise of permanent ownership that physical media is meant to provide.
