Kickstarter rolls back new mature content guidelines after week of backlash

Kickstarter has reversed course on controversial new content guidelines introduced earlier this month. The platform previously maintained relatively permissive policies regarding adult content, restricting only material that was explicitly pornographic or illegal. However, the company implemented significantly stricter guidelines that prohibited a much broader range of mature content, including items described as “implied sex acts” and specific terminology related to mature themes like “MILF/DILF” content. The specificity and breadth of these new restrictions sparked immediate backlash from creators and platform users who viewed them as excessive and reflective of outdated social attitudes toward human sexuality and creative expression.

After just one week of criticism, Kickstarter announced it would revert to its previous content policy. The decision came amid pressure from Stripe, the crowdfunding platform’s payment processor. According to Kickstarter’s explanation, Stripe maintains the ability to suspend campaigns that Kickstarter has already approved, giving the payment processor significant influence over content policies. This dynamic illustrates a broader challenge in the creator economy, where payment processors and third-party intermediaries can impose restrictions on platforms and creators, even when the platforms themselves have determined content meets their standards.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between content creators seeking creative freedom, platforms attempting to balance community standards, and payment processors concerned about liability and compliance. For many in the creative community, the reversal came as a relief, though it also underscored how payment processing companies ultimately hold considerable power over what content can be funded and created online.
