Peter Orullian talks working with Brandon Sanderson on Songs of the Dead

Brandon Sanderson, one of the most prolific contemporary fantasy and science fiction authors, has partnered with author Peter Orullian to complete a modern fantasy novel called Songs of the Dead, scheduled for release on June 16. The project represents the culmination of over a decade of creative development, with the story originally conceived in 2010 under the working title Death by Pizza!

The novel has undergone substantial revisions throughout its development, including major changes to its protagonist. Initially envisioned as a pizza delivery driver, the necromancer character evolved into a heavy metal musician as the narrative developed. These significant reimaginings reflect Sanderson’s meticulous approach to storytelling and his willingness to completely reconceive projects based on narrative needs.

Sanderson typically works solo but occasionally collaborates with other creators when complementary strengths can enhance a project. According to Orullian, Sanderson only pursues collaboration when his partner brings distinct talents that will benefit the work. Orullian’s involvement in bringing this long-gestating project to completion suggests the novel has reached a stage where external collaboration was necessary for its final realization. The partnership announcement will likely attract significant attention from Sanderson’s substantial fanbase, who have followed the project’s public evolution through various interviews and forum discussions over the past fifteen years.
