Unreal Engine 6 Revealed as Rocket League Gets a New Coat of Paint

Epic Games has unveiled Unreal Engine 6 with Rocket League as its inaugural showcase title. The announcement came during the Rocket League Championship Series Paris Major on May 24, 2026, marking a significant moment for both the esports franchise and the gaming industry.

After 11 years powered by Unreal Engine 3, Rocket League is finally receiving a major engine upgrade. The reveal featured a brief teaser trailer showcasing the free-to-play vehicular soccer game running on UE6, with noticeably enhanced visuals including more detailed car models, dynamic lighting, and improved reflections. The announcement dubbed this transition as the beginning of a “new era” for Rocket League, generating enthusiastic reactions from the live audience in Paris.

The teaser unveiled a distinctive purple logo for Unreal Engine 6, marking its first public appearance in action. While Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney had previously hinted at the new engine’s development during a 2025 interview, this represents the first concrete showcase of UE6 gameplay. The trailer also included imagery suggesting that Fortnite and LEGO Fortnite will receive UE6 support in the future.

However, Epic Games has not yet disclosed specific technical advantages of the new engine or provided a release date for the updated Rocket League. The reveal prioritized visual improvements over detailing performance enhancements or new gameplay features. This announcement holds particular significance given Unreal Engine 5’s widespread adoption across the gaming industry—UE6’s arrival represents a major milestone occurring four years after UE5’s release.

As Epic Games owns Psyonix, Rocket League’s developer, the choice to showcase UE6 through the long-running esports title makes strategic sense, providing early visibility for the company’s next-generation engine technology.
