Ultra-hard survival sandbox Kenshi passes 3 million copies sold, teases fans with ‘Kenshi 2 When?’ website

Indie survival sandbox game Kenshi has surpassed 3 million copies sold, developer Lo-Fi Games announced today. The milestone comes despite—or perhaps because of—the game’s notorious difficulty, which is central to its design philosophy.

Kenshi is renowned for its punishing gameplay experience. The extreme “rock bottom” starting condition exemplifies this philosophy: players begin stranded in a desert surrounded by enemies, with minimal stats (1 in all attributes), a missing left arm, malnourishment, and in a territory where starvation is illegal. This brutal setup encapsulates Kenshi’s core design—players must claw their way toward survival against overwhelming odds.

Despite its hardcore nature and niche appeal, Kenshi has proven significantly more commercially successful than expected. The three million sales figure demonstrates substantial mainstream interest in deeply challenging and unconventional gameplay experiences within the indie sector.

Lo-Fi Games thanked the community for their support, acknowledging players who recommended the game to friends, shared screenshots, and invested significant time in the experience. The developer also teased future plans with a “Kenshi 2 When?” website, signaling that a sequel is in active development and building anticipation among the fanbase.
