“The Wii U Was On Life Support” - Reggie Restates The NES & SNES Classic’s True Purpose

During Nintendo’s challenging Wii U era, the company faced declining hardware sales and needed to generate revenue while developing its next console. The NES and SNES Classic mini systems, launched alongside amiibo products, served as Nintendo’s answer to this business challenge.

Reggie Fils-Aimé, then-president of Nintendo of America, has confirmed that these retro mini consoles were never intended as long-term products. Instead, they functioned as a strategic “bridge” from the conclusion of the Wii U to the launch of the Nintendo Switch. The systems were explicitly marketed as limited-time offerings, creating both scarcity and urgency among consumers.

The strategy proved remarkably successful. The NES and SNES Classics generated substantial revenue during a critical period when Nintendo needed commercial momentum. By repackaging classic games in miniature hardware at premium prices, Nintendo leveraged nostalgia and collector interest to stabilize its business during the awkward transition between console generations.

A decade later, Reggie reflected on this period, reiterating how these products served their intended purpose—keeping Nintendo financially healthy while the Switch remained in development. The mini systems demonstrated Nintendo’s ability to extract value from its extensive back catalog while positioning the company for the Switch’s eventual launch.
