Peak’s success helped Aggro Crab commit to co-op, says studio head: ‘We thought we were a character action studio’

Aggro Crab’s experience developing Peak with Landfall Games has fundamentally shifted the studio’s development philosophy. What began as a quick prototype during a 4-week game jam has evolved into a major success that convinced Aggro Crab to fully commit to co-op gameplay as a core creative focus.

According to Aggro Crab studio head Nick Kaman, speaking at GDC, the collaboration with Landfall Games—a studio whose strengths align more closely with co-op development—proved instrumental in this strategic pivot. Landfall Games previously demonstrated expertise in this genre with Content Warning, which became one of the early standout successes in the “friendslop” category of party-oriented gaming experiences.

The partnership represents an unusual approach in game development, with Kaman noting that collaborations between separate studios on individual projects remain relatively uncommon in the industry. Despite starting as a side project, Peak’s commercial success validated the co-op gameplay direction and revealed strong market demand for this style of experience.

Aggro Crab’s transformation from primarily developing character action games to embracing co-op experiences highlights how market success can reshape studio identity and creative direction, with the studio leveraging complementary strengths through partnership rather than building unfamiliar expertise internally.
