This Weird App Lets You Read a One-Shot Manga for Free on Your PS5
PlayStation’s digital storefront has become home to an unexpected offering: Shujinkou Manga Reader, a free application that delivers an actual one-shot manga experience playable on your television. Rather than functioning as a traditional game, this unique app is explicitly a manga project created to introduce audiences to the Shujinkou JRPG’s world, characters, and story-driven experience in a more accessible, story-first format. The app deliberately presents the narrative content optimized for the PS5 platform.
The project’s reception has been decidedly mixed, with PS Store reviews averaging 2.96 stars—a rating that suggests many users found the concept confusing or unexpected. Whether due to unclear marketing or genuine disappointment with the format, the app clearly didn’t meet all expectations from those who discovered it.
The developers plan to sustain the experiment throughout the year, promising additional manga stories and chapters beyond the initial one-shot release. However, critical questions remain unanswered: will these expanded chapters remain free, or will the developer monetize future content? This pricing ambiguity reflects broader industry trends in how studios explore cross-media engagement strategies and leverage multiple platforms to reach diverse audiences.
