A recent HP laptop BIOS bug is leaving high-end Windows 11 PCs stuck in an endless BitLocker recovery loop

HP has confirmed that a recent BIOS firmware update is causing critical issues on its high-end laptop models, leaving users with devices stuck in boot loops and unable to access their systems.

The problematic update, distributed through Windows Update, primarily affects premium HP workstations including EliteBooks, ProBooks, and ZBook models running Windows 11. The bug manifests in multiple ways: affected PCs freeze during boot, display the Blue Screen of Death, or repeatedly boot into BitLocker recovery screens without being able to proceed past recovery mode.

The issue became apparent to users as early as April 2026. Users report that even after successfully entering their correct BitLocker recovery key, Windows 11 fails to recognize the authentication and continues looping back to the recovery screen, effectively locking them out of their own systems.

The bug has generated significant frustration among users, particularly those relying on these expensive workstations for professional work. Given that these are high-end systems targeting business and creative professionals, the downtime and inaccessibility caused by this automatic update has sparked outrage across affected user communities.

HP’s confirmation of the issue indicates the company is aware of the problem and presumably working on a fix, though the initial rollout of the buggy firmware through automatic updates highlights potential issues with QA testing before distribution. The incident raises concerns about the stability of automatic firmware updates and the importance of thorough testing before deployment to end users.
