Marathon Voice Actor Hits Back at Online Trolls and Says ‘People Just Want to Hate’
Veteran voice actor Elias Toufexis, who voices the Assassin character in Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon, has spoken out against online harassment directed at the game. Toufexis addressed the backlash stemming from Bungie’s strategic decision to prioritize Marathon’s development over continued support for Destiny 2, the studio’s flagship live-service title.
Following Bungie’s announcement that Destiny 2 support will be completely wound down with a final content update in June, many players have expressed frustration and directed criticism toward Marathon. Toufexis acknowledged the widespread perception among Destiny 2 fans that the original game was sacrificed to allow Marathon to succeed. However, the voice actor pushed back against what he characterizes as unwarranted online hostility, suggesting that some people are simply looking for reasons to hate rather than engaging constructively.
Toufexis, known for his work in the Deus Ex franchise and numerous other video games, called for perspective on the situation. His remarks reflect ongoing tensions within the gaming community regarding resource allocation decisions made by major studios. The transition marks a significant shift for Bungie, which has maintained Destiny 2 as a core part of its business for nearly a decade.
The voice actor’s comments come as Marathon prepares for its release, with the game representing Bungie’s new creative direction following years of development. While the decision to sunset Destiny 2 is driven by business and development resource considerations, it has proven controversial among a passionate fanbase.
