Report: Dreams and LittleBigPlanet studio Media Molecule developing new open-world IP

Media Molecule, the British PlayStation studio known for the Dreams creation platform and LittleBigPlanet series, is reportedly developing a new open-world intellectual property. The information surfaced through an online portfolio belonging to a senior environment designer who joined the studio in April 2025.

According to the portfolio, the designer’s role on the unannounced project includes level design, main point-of-interest blocking, moment-to-moment gameplay implementation, forage design, and scripting of various gameplay elements. The combination of “open-world content” and “forage design” suggests the game may incorporate survival or crafting mechanics, systems that have become standard in contemporary open-world titles.

This marks a potential departure for Media Molecule, which has primarily focused on player-creation tools and community-driven experiences through existing franchises. The shift toward traditional open-world game development could indicate Sony’s intent to expand Media Molecule’s portfolio beyond its creative platform focus. No official announcement has been made by the studio, and details about the project’s scope, release timeline, and confirmed platforms remain undisclosed.
