Microsoft confirms that Samsung is killing OneDrive integration on its Galaxy phones very soon: Here’s what will happen to your photo backups
Samsung is ending OneDrive integration in its Galaxy smartphone app, effective September 30, 2026. Beginning that date, Samsung Galaxy users will no longer be able to back up their photos through the Samsung Gallery app to Microsoft’s OneDrive service. Instead, Samsung is directing users to its own cloud storage solution.
The change, now officially confirmed by Microsoft, follows previous reports from last year when code strings in the Samsung Gallery app suggested the company was planning a transition away from OneDrive support. At that time, speculation emerged that users would need to begin using Samsung’s cloud service instead.
The discontinuation means Galaxy smartphone owners who currently rely on OneDrive through the Gallery app will need to plan for alternative backup solutions. Users have until September 30 to migrate their data and adjust their backup workflows accordingly.
This shift reflects a broader industry trend of manufacturers developing proprietary cloud ecosystems. By integrating their own cloud services directly into devices, manufacturers like Samsung can create more unified experiences while reducing dependence on third-party services and strengthening their competitive positioning in the cloud storage market.
