Star Citizen Passes $1 Billion In Funding, As Dev Launches $5,000 Ship That You Can’t Use

Star Citizen, the ambitious PC space simulation developed by Roberts Space Industries and Cloud Imperium Games, has reached a significant crowdfunding milestone: $1.007 billion from over 6.5 million backers since the campaign launched in 2012.

Despite its extended development cycle spanning more than a decade, Star Citizen remains in early access and is currently playable. Chris Roberts, founder of Roberts Space Industries, recently outlined the game’s release roadmap. The standalone single-player campaign Squadron 42, which features an extensive cast of celebrity actors, is targeting a 2026 release. Following Squadron 42’s completion, the 1.0 version of the main Star Citizen multiplayer experience is expected to launch.

Roberts told Variety that reaching this milestone “feels pretty epic,” underscoring the significance of approaching the long-anticipated full release after years of incremental development. The sustained crowdfunding success demonstrates continued confidence from the gaming community in Cloud Imperium Games’ vision, despite the extended timeline.

The $1 billion milestone positions Star Citizen as one of the most-funded crowdfunded video game projects in history. It highlights the project’s unique business model, which has sustained development through ongoing crowdfunding campaigns rather than traditional publisher backing.
